SEOUL (AP) — OpenAI on Wednesday announced a partnership with South Korean tech giants Samsung Electronics and SK Group to provide chips and other solutions for “Stargate,” a $500 billion project aimed at building large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

The announcement came shortly after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with President Lee Jae Myung and top South Korean corporate leaders in Seoul.

President Lee hailed the partnership as “a pivotal opportunity for South Korea’s semiconductor industry to take a leading role in the AI era and create new jobs.”

According to statements from both sides, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the world’s two largest memory chip manufacturers, will accelerate production of advanced semiconductors to meet the growing memory demands of the Stargate project.

Meanwhile, the ChatGPT maker has signed a separate agreement with SK Telecom to explore the establishment of an AI data center in Korea, tentatively named “Stargate Korea.”

OpenAI also plans to collaborate with other Samsung affiliates on data center technologies and potential expansion of local infrastructure capacity.

서울(AP) — 오픈AI(OpenAI)는 수요일 삼성전자와 SK그룹 등 한국의 주요 기술 기업들과 손잡고, 인공지능(AI) 인프라 구축을 목표로 한 5,000억 달러 규모의 ‘스타게이트(Stargate)’ 프로젝트를 추진하기 위한 칩 및 솔루션 공급 협력을 공식 발표했다.

이번 발표는 오픈AI의 샘 올트먼(Sam Altman) 최고경영자가 서울에서 이재명 대통령 및 한국 주요 기업 경영진과 회담을 가진 직후 이뤄졌다.이 대통령은 이번 파트너십을 두고 “한국 반도체 산업이 AI 시대의 핵심 축으로 자리매김하고, 새로운 일자리를 창출할 수 있는 중대한 전환점”이라고 평가했다.

양측의 발표에 따르면, 세계 최대 메모리 반도체 제조사인 삼성전자와 SK하이닉스는 스타게이트 프로젝트가 요구하는 급증하는 메모리 수요에 대응하기 위해 첨단 반도체 생산 속도를 더욱 높일 계획이다.

한편, 챗GPT(ChatGPT) 개발사 오픈AI는 SK텔레콤과 별도의 협약을 체결해 한국 내에 ‘스타게이트 코리아(Stargate Korea)’로 불리는 AI 데이터센터 설립을 공동 검토하기로 했다. 또한 삼성 계열사들과는 데이터센터 기술 협력과 국내 인프라 확충 방안에 대해 협의를 이어갈 예정이다.

한편 SK하이닉스는 지난 해 4월 한국에서 AI 반도체에 추가 146억 달러 투자 계획을 밝힌바 있다. 올해 9월에는 SK하이닉스 주가, 차세대 칩 개발 성공 후 사상 최고치 기록 회사는 신세대 고대역폭 메모리(HBM) 칩을 대량 생산할 준비가 되어 있다고 밝혔다.(The Wall Street Journal)
